Wedding Reception Themes

During the planning process of a wedding celebration, reception themes can sometimes be a major struggling point. It can be difficult to combine tastes and preferences between a couple as well as practicalities. Whether a couple ultimately selects a traditional wedding reception theme or a creative one, there are plenty of options available for planning a unique celebration.

Selecting a Theme

Wedding reception themes are often related to something representing the bride and groom as a couple such as the location of the wedding celebration, something about where the couple met or something that is just an interest the couple shares. But with a bride’s little girl dreams at stake, a groom’s adamant refusal to wear anything pink and the opinions of bridesmaids, mom’s and anyone else who wants to join in, it’s simply a difficult decision to make.

It will be important to remain flexible during the decision process for your wedding reception theme. A bride insisting on using a color that is difficult to match such as a teal may change her mind after realizing it won’t be what she envisioned. It can also get to the point where a decision simply needs to get made- and everyone has to stick to it so that the planning can move forward.

Reception Themes

A theme can be traditional without being boring or expected. Some traditional themes include fairy tales, with sugar castles topping the cake, a horse and carriage bringing the princess bride to her groom and even going as far as to select a grand ballroom styled wedding gown complete with a tiara. A twist on the fairy tale theme would be to choose a medieval era for your fairy tale using goblets as your champagne flutes and renaissance dresses for bridesmaids and flower girls.

If a couple is marrying near the holidays, there are multiple variations on themes. An October wedding doesn’t mean costumes are mandatory. Instead, you can select warm fall colors, using leaves throughout your theme and focusing instead on the season rather than the holiday. In turn if you wish to have a Halloween theme in your reception, plenty of candy give aways and jack o’lantern centerpieces are simply must-haves.

Other themes a couple can consider are floral themes with daisies or sunflowers, colors such as all things purple including a specialty drink or even a theme based on an alma mater with the fight song played for recessionals or entrances. A theme suggesting romance can be driven with deep red color selections, candlelight and roses. If a couple are fans of their hometown or want to showcase their honeymoon destination, selecting elements to show local or exotic flavors may be just what’s necessary, such as local foods, wines or venue that is specific to a hometown or possibly steel drum musician for Caribbean themes.

Selecting a theme is truly the hard part. This may be the first true test of compromising for an engaged couple as they work to make their own ideas part of such an important and special day. Once a wedding reception theme is finally selected, the creativity can finally start to flow with ideas, concepts and memorable features for guests to enjoy.
