How to Plan a Cheap Wedding
Understanding how to plan a cheap
wedding is important to getting your married life off to a good
start if budget is an issue. A cheap wedding does not have to
be a compromise of taste, style or quality. There are hundreds
of options available to the bride and groom looking in the
right places and it doesn’t always start with simply looking
for the cheapest price. It is a special day that should be
marked with a couple’s
personality.
The Rehearsal
Dinner
The rehearsal dinner is a necessary
component to wedding planning but it doesn’t have to strain a
budget. Pizza and pasta parties, barbecue picnics and pot lucks
are all viable, cost efficient options that don’t have to be
thought of as cheap. Just because you are planning a cheap
wedding doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice a lively, relaxed
occasion for your rehearsal. Pizzas with plenty of toppings to
choose from along with pasta side dishes and one or two salads
is a perfect, relaxed way to start a party. Soda is simple
enough but wine and beer can be budget friendly depending on
your selections. BBQ’s with burgers to order and picnic fixings
like potato salad and bake beans are easy alternatives often
readily available at a local super market deli. And there is
one, very cost effective option that is frequently overlooked
and that is potluck. Wedding party members, your friends and
family all truly want to be helpful. Allowing them to make a
menu item and bring it to your rehearsal dinner is almost never
seen as imposing and in fact, allows your loved ones to feel
helpful. And it might get them all out of your hair for a while
as they prepare their dishes!
The
Cake
The beautiful seven tier, ornately
decorated number sitting right in the front window of that
tiny, homey bakery isn’t in the cards when planning a cheap
wedding. Not to mention, you don’t quite have 600 guests
invited to your party to eat this cake that costs more than
your gown. However, there are many bakeries that will provide a
mock up cake that isn’t really cake but is decorated with real
sugar. It allows a decorator more time to create your dream
confection without the usual worries of fresh cake and the time
constraints posed on ornate sugar decorations which could
reduce their pricing. At least one tier is made from ‘real’
cake that the bride and groom slice before their guests. Once
the decorative cake is removed, a large sheet cake with your
selected cake and icing flavors is kept in the back kitchen and
sliced by the staff for your guests.
The
Gifts
While weddings are a wonderful time
for getting gifts, there’s plenty of gift giving as well. When
planning a cheap wedding, think of sentiment more than price.
Personalized gifts such as a photo montage of favorite moments
shared with a maid of honor or other special member of your
party is a touch that will last far longer than another
engraved something or other they don’t really want or need.
Parents and siblings like to know what you remember about them,
maybe those funny secrets you’ve never told them or shenanigans
you might have gotten into together. With all the beautiful
paper patterns and computer fonts, write them down and frame
them as keepsakes. Skip the wallets or watches for your
groomsmen and instead go for what they really want- insurance
of your time AFTER the wedding! Give out a single ticket to
each groomsman for a simple local event to assure them there
will still be time for old buddies after the vows are said.
The most important thing even when
planning a cheap wedding is that your wedding day is meant to
celebrate why you are there in a way designed by you and your
new spouse. It is not suppose to be representing your financial
picture. Consider creative, heartfelt solutions that create a
relaxed and memorable atmosphere for you and your
guests.
