How to Make Wedding Favors

As a bride thumbs through any number of bridal magazines, she’s likely to come across dozens of ideas for wedding favors. However, without fail, the ability to simply order up enough for each guest will be hampered by cost, color, quantities, sizes, etc. Or some brides simply want to put their own personalized touch on their reception and want to know how to make wedding favors of their own. Fortunately, making wedding favors has become easier with craft store selections but a strategy or plan is still needed to pull off creating a special accent for guests to enjoy.

Where to Start

If a bride decides she wishes to make her own wedding favors, she should begin with creating a plan long BEFORE heading to the store. For starters, knowing how many wedding favors are needed will help to determine a few other decisions. You may want to consider whether you are going to create a wedding favor for each individual which can be pricey and time consuming depending on the length of your guest list. Or you may choose to provide one favor per couple which is a budget and time saver.

Once the number of wedding favors has been determined, it’s important to get an idea of what you want to create. There are tons of internet resources, magazines and bridal catalogs that can help point a bride in the right direction. A bridal show often has plenty of vendors, some even exclusively presenting wedding favors. A vendor’s display can stir up a new idea or the vendor may possibly provide a sample that the bride can replicate.

Important Things to Think About

As you are selecting the type of wedding favor you’d like to create, there are a few details you may want to keep in mind. If you are selecting an item that is perishable or edible- such as chocolates- you may want to consider how you will be transporting and storing the favors. Melted chocolate won’t look elegant, even if it’s wrapped with satin ribbons! The same is true if you are using breakables or have a destination wedding which may make it difficult to transport your items. You may need to consider if it will be easier to transport your favors unassembled.

Heading to the Store

With your wedding favor idea in hand, it is now a good time to finally head to the store for any necessary supplies. You may not need to leave home at all if you do some internet searching. The volume of items you need may make internet shopping a much better option than trying to find the right quantities, styles or colors for your wedding favors. Craft stores and stores specializing in bridal supplies can be great resources.

It is important to not get too ambitious with details. There is plenty to worry about with a wedding in the first place without spending hundreds of hours creating something that could have easily been ordered from a catalog or could have been done more concisely with the right expertise. Consider enlisting help from bridesmaids, mom’s, mother-in-laws or even anyone from the groom’s camp that may want to help. And if your plan calls for you to wait until the last minute, make sure part of your plan also provides for a back up to recover from anything like melted chocolate to messy glue.
