If you’ve always liked working with flowers and landscaping yet never had the opportunity to go to college and study horticulture, you might think that a general flunkie is all that you can ever be. However, there are ways you can get the training you need to add to your natural talent and experience so that you can become an industry-certified landscape technician.
One easy route is to look into the Landscape Industry Technician certification program, which you can do by joining the Landscape Contractors Association. If you get certified, you will enhance your skills, investing in your future career.
In order to be qualified take the landscaper technician certification test that will be the final requirement in order to gain technician certification, you must complete one of the following:
Have hands-ons landscaping experience. Over 4,000 hours worth.
Get an industry degree (2- or 4-year) and work at least 2,000 hours as a landscaper.
Work 1,000 hours, have a 2- or 4- year industry degree, and complete an internship program.
In order to get certified, you will need to pass a comprehensive examination. You will have assistance available when doing so. You can get lectures and hands-on practice by signing up for two day-long classes before completing the exam. Check out the test registration dates, and make sure to get your registration packet returned on time. If you sign up early enough, you’ll have plenty of time to study the exam booklet and get a study guide.
You’ll find many different problems on the test such as hardscape and softscape installation and turn and ornamental maintenance. You will need to complete the problems in all four categories successfully plus provide a sample installation or maintenance landscaping project in order to pass the test and receive your certification.
After you join the LCA, you’ll get the guidance you need to obtain your certification more easily. You’ll be able to find higher-paying jobs in the industry as your skills progress. You could also become a landscape designer or landscape architect by enrolling in additional programs offered by the LCA.
