Modern weddings can be very expensive but they don’t have to be. Not everyone can afford a castle wedding (although castle weddings are amazing). Luckily, there are inexpensive ways for you to have a wedding day to remember. During the war, couples still managed to marry, and most on a shoestring. Bombed out churches were still used, and couples went back to a pub or their home for a nice cup of tea.
Most brides wouldn’t want to reduce costs as far as that these days, and in peace time there isn’t quite the needn’t to make do so much. However, it also isn’t necessary to spend vast sums of money on a wedding or on fancy wedding receptions if you don’t want to or can’t afford to.
Wedding cakes can me handmade which saves a lot of money. They can also be made out of a stand of fairy cakes. If you are not much of a baker yourself, your local supermarket will have plain white cakes that can be stacked.
You can make wedding favours yourself too. These can be edible such as sweets or cakes, or could be as simple as pebbles with names on. Handmade cards can be used to thanks the bridesmaids.
Centrepieces for the tables can also be made by hand using candles on pedestals. Make sure the pedestals are high enough or low enough that the guests are able to see each other across the table. Flower petals or sweets can be scattered on the tables.
Using silk flowers amongst real flowers can help keep costs down as the silk flowers can be used to decorate the home afterwards. The real flowers add scent.
Bubble machines can be bought cheaply from toy stores and they create a magical and fun atmosphere. An alternative is put small bottles of bubble mixture on tables for guests to play with.
The wedding reception doesn’t have to cost much either. You can have it in a nice local pub or friends house if there is space.
The wedding dress can also be bought fairly cheaply from a department store or even made from a second hand one if you know someone with good sewing skills.
Your wedding is what you make it and at the end of the day, it is people and the thought that count, not how much you spent.
