Diamond mens platinum wedding rings and bands are supposed to look fashionable. They are supposed to look expensive and stylish the way a BMW is supposed to look. Apart from the setting design and type of gemstone used perhaps the major element of style is the precious metal used and the finish on the metal itself that makes for a discerning and good looking ring.
Platinum is the metal of choice when it comes to diamond men’s platinum wedding rings partly because it doesn’t need to be rhodium plated and is a stronger and purer metal than gold. It also takes a good polish as well as retaining a matte finish for much longer than 14k or 18k white gold would before needing to be refinished. It also has a higher specific gravity and feel heftier on the finger. The color is also different with a tendency towards a gray patina as the metal ages.
Both rings are durable, but men’s platinum wedding bands is a more durable metal than gold. Out of the two platinum weighs almost as twice as much as gold does. A common downside for both metals is that they scratch very easily. This means that you will have to maintain your ring more often than if you had a ring made out of a metal such as titanium or tungsten.
Another advantage that platinum has over gold is the fact that it is hypoallergenic. This means that it is not known to cause allergies or irritations to the skin as opposed to gold and silver which is known to cause these types of conditions on those who are allergic to them.
Yellow gold, though not as popular as white for right hand rings is still being used for this type of ring. This precious yellow metal has many adherents who will wear nothing else. Diamonds still look good against this metal but they have to be in the colorless or near colorless range of color shades to look good. The distinction between 14k and 18k gold is mainly found in price since 14k can be formulated to have the same hue as 18k even though the actual precious metal content is different.
Although both types of precious metals have their pluses and minuses, there is no reason that you cannot have them both in the same right hand ring. Yellow and white metal combinations are used in many bridal ring styles so why not in right hand rings? These rings are often referred to as two tone since they combine the strength and whiteness of platinum with the yellow warmth of gold. This combinations allows the ring to go with more color combinations of dress while still allowing gemstones to be set in the sturdiest precious metal possible.
White Gold rings cost between half and a third as much as platinum (for 18ct gold), making them far more avoidable. Although they are commonly plated with rhodium to give extra whiteness to the metal, which can rub off over time, having the plating redone is simple and quick so should not cause too much hassle. The only major drawback of choosing a white gold ring is if you have an allergy to nickel, which is one of the metals commonly used for the alloy. It is also a far lighter metal than platinum. Palladium is a relative newcomer to the world of wedding rings, only having become popular in the last few years. As such you might not have thought of it before. Varying between a quarter and a third of the price of a platinum ring, a palladium wedding ring is often the most affordable option. As well as having the same hypoallergenic qualities as platinum it is also lighter weight, much like white gold. Its finish does last longer than platinum, but not as long as white gold and the refinishing again takes longer than gold.
